BEING A CONTENT CREATOR IS AN INVESTMENT

I wrote on my WhatsApp status a few weeks ago, that being a content creator is more than just turning on your camera and saying “hello, welcome back to my channel.” It is an investment!

Fortunately, a few start-up creators like me agreed and with our discussion, I realize we all face similar difficulties as content creators.

Honestly, having to go through the process of creating content can be tiring. Sometimes, thinking about it stresses you out before you start the process. From pre-production (content research & strategy, script writing, location hunting, prepping up to look good ), to production (Shooting videos, taking thumbnail pictures), and post-production (editing and publishing). All this, done by one person within limited time and budget can be a lot. Especially, if you leave in a country like Nigeria where there are bigger forces, fighting against your willpower (like PHCN & Network providers).

Well, “where there is a will, there is a way.” Here are a few tips, I have explored in creating content, I believe will be helpful to a content creator like me:

 1. Be focused on quality to quantity

As a beginner, you will hear a lot about pushing out more content at the beginning to fasten your growth on the internet. That I disagree with! You can be creating more content with no value, so why are you creating it, in the first place? This is why you need to have a content strategy that helps you stay focused on the value of your content to just pushing out content for content’s sake.

2. Understand what consistency means to you

You don’t have to push out content every day if you don’t have the energy to push out valuable content every day. You also don’t have to batch-create if it doesn’t work for you. Ask yourself how many times can I create valuable content a week and stick with it. That is what consistency is to you.

3. Know your strength

The fact that everyone is dancing on Tiktok doesn’t mean you need to join the crowd or the fact that Tech content looks so fascinating and the likes of kagantech & misstechy are gaining enormous views and engagement, and then you want to start doing tech content. Calm down!

What do you love doing and can do it effortlessly if they wake you up from your sleep by midnight? Think about that and find your way to create content from it.

4. Start small

A lot of us, are in a hurry to make it like the big content creators out there without putting in the effort. That’s why you will see Funke that just signed up on IG yesterday, already has 1000 followers in 2 days. Funke how naaaaa!  I know the number of audiences you get determines the rate at which brands will want to partner with you, but as one of my favourite artist Prince Emmanuel said, “na small small, dem dey take lick hot soup.”  Grow your audience organically, that is the beauty in your journey. Remember, it is not the followers that matters, but the engagement. Relax, you will get there one day.

I hope I have been able to inspire a start-up or even experienced content creator like me. Hoping to meet you all at the top.
